There is a 50% surcharge on loads containing banned materials. This initiative is in keeping with material bans implemented at Metro Vancouver waste management facilities and is intended to prevent the disposal of recyclable and compostable materials.

There are also some items that cannot be safely accepted at the Mission Landfill. These items can be dropped off free of charge at the Mission Recycling Depot or one of the other authorized local facilities.
Eyeglasses are now accepted at the Mission Recycling Depot in partnership with Third World Eye Care Society, a non-profit organization, which collects recycled eyeglasses and distributes them to individuals in developing countries. Recipients also receive free eye exams by trained volunteers
Accepted are all eyeglasses in good condition, including drugstore-bought reading glasses. The following are NOT accepted:

The Mission Landfill (Minnie’s Pit) is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week, except for statutory holidays, Boxing Day, and Easter Sunday when they are closed. Please note early closures on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (closing at 3:00 pm).

The Mission Landfill accepts typical municipal solid waste, including household garbage, furniture, appliances, residential renovation waste, greenwaste and scrap metal. A minimum charge of $5 per load applies to all residential and commercial loads received from Mission.
The Mission Landfill is only allowed to accept waste into the landfill from within Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), with waste from within the City of Mission being charged a lower rate than waste from other areas of the FVRD. Therefore, when dropping off waste for disposal in the landfill (garbage and other materials, including drywall and asbestos-containing materials), residents are required to show identification which confirms they are a resident of the City of Mission and/or the FVRD.
There is no charge for residential recyclables, residential food waste, grass clippings and scrap metal, including appliances, automotive batteries and propane tanks
Dog waste can be accepted at the landfill, however please be sure to notify the scalehouse staff what you are disposing of.
Landfill Recyclables: residents of rural areas of Mission are encouraged to drop off their blue bin recyclables at the Mission Landfill or at the Mission Recycling Depot.

The privately owned Mission Recycle Centre at 7233 Park Street accepts additional materials, including beverage containers for deposit refund and Styrofoam™.

Do you have any reusable or resellable items too good to be discarded? Why not try one of the charitable organizations (see page 5 of your 2019 Curbside Collection Calendar for a current listing) in our area to see if your trash may be someone else’s treasure. Please keep in mind that the items must be clean, in working condition and actually reusable.
Donation bins for reusable clothing are located in various locations throughout Mission, and are provided by the Canadian Diabetes Association. For specific bin locations, please click on the link to their website.
If you have too much fruit to deal with, the “Mission Food Access Network” coordinates the gleaning of excess fruit and vegetables from your garden. Please visit www.mfan.ca and click on “Food Gleaning” to have volunteers help you with the harvest. One third the bounty goes to you, one third goes to the pickers, and the rest goes to a local, charitable food program.
St. Joseph’s Food Bank is the official registered food bank for Mission, BC, and is registered as a service provider by Food Banks Canada.
